Galisteo is a small historic village about twenty miles south of Santa Fe, built in the traditional way — thick-walled adobe, enclosed compounds, courtyards, and window openings set deep into the mass of the wall. It is one of the most photographed settings in New Mexico, and it is a genuinely demanding place to keep glass clean.

The Galisteo Basin produces fine red silt in quantity and moves it around freely; the village has little in the way of windbreak. What makes the difference here, though, is the architecture. A window set eighteen inches back into an adobe wall is sheltered from rain, which means it never gets even the partial rinse a flush-mounted window gets, while the recess itself acts as a trap that collects blown silt and holds it. The sill and reveal fill up, and every gust reloads the pane from material sitting inches away.

Cleaning here therefore has to include the openings, not just the glass — sills, reveals, and channels cleared by hand so the pane is not immediately re-dirtied by its own frame. It also has to be done gently. Adobe plaster, whether traditional mud or lime, is soft and water-sensitive; hand-finished surfaces mark easily and are expensive to repair. We keep water controlled and off the plaster, and we work these buildings by hand rather than with volume.
