Pecos sits east of Santa Fe at the mouth of the canyon that carries the Pecos River down out of the Sangre de Cristos, and the environment there has more in common with the mountains than with the high desert twenty miles west. That changes what ends up on the windows.

The spring load is pollen, and in a ponderosa canyon it is substantial. Pine pollen is finer and far more abundant than most people expect, and it coats every surface for several weeks. Through the warm months, pitch and sap take over — genuinely difficult residue that hardens on glass and will not come off with detergent and effort alone. It requires a solvent, applied and given time to work, and attempting to scrub it off instead is a good way to scratch the pane.

The canyon also catches serious monsoon rainfall between July and September, considerably more than Santa Fe gets. Heavy runoff picks up accumulated debris from roofs and gutters and carries it straight down the face of the building, which is why windows here so often show vertical brown streaking after a storm cycle rather than the even film you get in the desert. Cleaning that off is straightforward; getting ahead of it means timing the year's second cleaning for after the monsoon breaks in September rather than before it.
