White Rock sits on the mesa above White Rock Canyon, downhill from Los Alamos but still at roughly 6,400 feet, on ground that is open and exposed in every direction that matters. Wind moves along the canyon rim more or less continuously through the dry season, carrying the fine volcanic tuff dust of the plateau along with it, and there is very little vegetation or terrain to slow it down before it reaches a window.

The town's houses are laid out to take advantage of what is there — the canyon, the Rio Grande below, and the Sangre de Cristos across the valley — which means large, deliberately placed view windows facing exactly the direction the weather comes from. It is the right way to build here and it produces the same predictable result: the best windows in the house are the ones that get dirtiest, and they are the ones where a mediocre cleaning job is most obvious. The practical part is that a proper clean here has to include the frames, sills, and tracks. On exposed rim lots those channels fill with fine grit quickly, and grit sitting in a track is a reservoir that reloads the glass with the next gust.
