Lamy

Lamy is a small railroad village about eighteen miles southeast of Santa Fe, best known as the Amtrak stop that serves the city. Its setting is wide-open grassland, and that openness is the defining fact for anyone maintaining a property here. There is very little tree cover, very little terrain relief, and consequently very little to slow the wind. Fine grit moves across Lamy more or less continuously through the dry season and settles on whatever is standing in its way.

The result is that windows in Lamy do not get dirty in the layered, gradual way they do in a sheltered in-town neighborhood. They get sandblasted with a light film that re-establishes itself quickly and works its way into every frame joint and sash channel. Cleaning the glass alone gives a result that looks wrong within days, because the frames simply reload the pane. Frames, sills, and channels have to be cleaned at the same time for the work to hold.

Lamy also has a meaningful stock of older buildings — original village houses and railroad-era structures with single-pane sash, wood frames, and traditional putty glazing. That glass and that glazing will not tolerate the pressure or the chemistry that modern double-pane units shrug off. Dried putty cracks, old wood absorbs, and original glass can be surprisingly thin. We work these properties by hand, with methods matched to their age.
